Top-level comments on this article: (4 total)I think ol' Lloyd is very much incorrect when he wrote, "If you play 1 pick-3 straight combination for 1000 drawings, your chance (degree of certainty) to hit the winning combination is approximately 0.632 (63.2%)." It doesn't matter whether you play a 3 number straight 1 time or 1,000 times, your chances of having the drawn numbers match your straight will always be: 1 in 1, 000 or, expressed as a percentage, 0.1% chance. See aLotteryNumberPicker + dot + com/pick3+ dot + htm You might want to check out the 'Law of Independent Trials' to see that what you do on one play has absolutely no bearing on any other play. It applies to flipping a coin, rolling dice, and... the Pick 3 Lottery. Sorry, Lloyd.
Chuck, i believe Lloyd was trying to say statistically in the past the chances had been .632. He was trying to be helpful and your just being a critic . Open your mind and be a winner.
chuck is right lol... mba is statistical analysis confirms it.. so stop thinking like the lottery wants you to think in order to continue buying pick 3's. In my honest opinion people need to stop viewing the lotto as a paycheck or retirement system; furthermore there is no logical reason to believe that any one drawing has any bearing on another. If you win.. you're lucky... so in theory whether you play the same numbers or different, in theory you will win 1 time out of every 1000 you play. Therefore if you spend 1000 to win 300 you will be taking a 70% loss in the long run. Once again to reiterate the lottery is tax on people who are bad at math and/or lack foresight. So in conclusion play the lottery as fun, not with a system to make your ends meet or put your kids through college (ps make sure they get to college so they earn legitimate money and not fall prey to the "surefire lottery systems" as you have.. save some money and end the vicious cycle of lottery investment in your family)
Yes, your chances are still 1 in a 1,000; but let's face it. If you're playing, say, 273, but 108 hits instead, you KNOW your chances of hitting 273 in the next draw are now 1 in 999 BECAUSE 108 ISN'T GOING TO HIT SO SOON AGAIN. Sure, the odds say 108 has as great a likelihood as any other 3-digit number, but we know from observation of the 3-digit lottery results that THAT sort of thing happens about once a year. Mr. Lloyd is trying to take into account what ACTUALLY happens with these numbers, not just what the statistical calculations predict. This seems to be the whole basis for HIS method of winning the 3-digit lottery. He's trying to get us to realize that we players have to observe not just WHAT happens, but WHEN it happens, and HOW it happens if we intend to win with any frequency. END
